In the month of may I was given the opportunity to work and exhibit in the watchpost in Millingen. The watchpost is right at the point where the Rhine is split into the Waal and the Pannersch channel, the latter of which eventually becomes the Rhine that meets the sea at Katwijk. This is also the starting point of the river delta. Up to this point the river follows its natural course. From this point onwards the eternal struggle between man and water begins.

The Watchpost has the appearance of a stark and impenetrable fortress. Reality is different: artists are very welcome here. Here, the works that had already been materialized in the Panta Rei project were also able to find a natural place for themselves. The cloths made at the source of the Rhine found their place outside, exposed to the elements as at the place where they were made. The "Melting Stones" ended up in the stairwell of the building. Upstairs in beautiful daylight was the place for the "Sources" with a place of honor for the last "Source" in the panoramic room.

My prolonged stay at the watchpost is an alienating experience. There is an 180 degree panoramic view that grants me a total overview of the river, and the continuous coming and going of ships with all the associated activities. Looking from above, not hearing anything, the view eventually becomes abstract and soothing. It goes on and on, but soon it no longer intrudes into my inner space. And the river, it just flows on and on.

Het werkproces / The working process.

Mijn tijdelijke atelier /My tempory studio

The essence of the Panta Rei project is to let go of control and move with the flow. Yet during my preparations for my stay here I could not resist to contrive some certainties. When I visited the spot in advance in February I already went looking for spots to find my basic materials sand, clay and gravel. On the other side of the river I found a stone mill. The romanticist in me already saw a clay pit there with old clay layers up for grabs. The reality was different. The clay lit was there but al the materials were brought in and mixed with other materials to create the best manageable substance. I also found spots to pick up beautiful sand and gravel, but when I needed these deposits these during my stay they were unreachable due to high water. The circumstances seemingly forced me to let go of control and go with the flow.

The starting point when making my primal landscapes is often a natural matter fully adapted to the convenience of man. During the work process I search for a state of purity in which the matter begins to resemble its natural state. Jokingly I like to compare the creation of my Primal landscapes to a trip from the Gamma (a lumberyard) to God. In the Panta Rei project thus far the starting materials were white wood, MDF and plasterboard. I took these with me to Millingen. The materials that inspired me the most in these surroundings were willow branches. These grow everywhere in this environment. Willow branches also form a connection to my previous working location in Katwijk, where they were used for dike maintenance.

At the start of the creative process my interest rapidly shifted from the materials that I brought with me to the locally harvested willow branches. This tendency continued on during the rest of the week. The first work was rich in variety in sand, clay and gravel. In the last work only willow branch and clay remained.

De andere kant van de stroom / The other side of the stream.

On the other side of the stream, at the mouth of the river in Katwijk, things are very different than at the source of the river in Switzerland. Over there it does not matter what plans mankind has for the river. That is up to the water and the mountains.

At the mouth of the river, where and when the water flows is fully controlled by men.
Where the river meets the sea the tables get turned. Where and when water flows is fully controlled by man. The objective is to maintain the stream and to protect the land from the seawater. Whether or not the stream is allowed to flow is a purely rational decision. Impressive structures have been erected to accomplish this.

As I cycled over this structure on a regular base, the idea for the Panta Rei project began to take shape within me. In my work the tension between nature's individual identity and the intentions of man is a universally present factor. Here in Katwijk the identity of the river is fully encapsulated. This inspired me to travel to the source of the river to further investigate this tension.

At this moment in Katwijk, a lot of work is in progress to reinforce the coastline in order to match the rising sea level. This means that the spillway of the river also has to be modified. This  basically means excavating the bottom and plaster it like a highway. Not unlike how a painter prepares his canvas, the riverbed is also prepared with sustainable cloth and willow branches.

The river banks also have to be adjusted. New, higher dams guide the water to the sea. Striking is that new basalt blocks rapidly attain a beautiful green color due to growing seaweed. A local passer-by told me this weed was intestine whose  that I harvested to use in my studio.

My impressions at the spillway of the Rhine at Katwijk led to a diptych. The inspiration is the contrast between the uncontrolled conditions at the source of the river, and man's desire for full control at the other end of the river. The flow of the river is rationalized, the flow of creativity certainly is not.

The used materials also come from both sides of the river. Clay and gravel from the source and clay and sand adhered at the mouth of the river throughout the centuries. This is connected by the seaweed soon after a new human intervention took place.

Sediment

The sediment process is clearly visible at the first waterstreams feeding the river. Pure clay particles immediately begin to sink the moment the water ceases to move. The particles accumulate upon the grit at the river bed, and a layer of clay begins to grow. As summer progresses, more and more water streams dry up. Exposed to the air, the clay is granted tranquility and begins to connect with its surroundings. It gives new vegetation an opportunity to grow. I use this very phenomenon in my working process.

A similar process has been taking place with the inspiration that I accumulated during this trip. After coming home, the inspiration is still actively moving, still very much connected to the trip, the river, and the mountains. Back in my studio in Noordwijk this shows in the work that I have begun to materialize. The first works, the "Melting Stones", are directly and in a raw manner connected with my experience in the mountains. As the series progresses, the inspiration comes to a rest and starts to connect with the work that I have already developed over the years. Very much like the clay, inspiration gradually comes to rest to connect with its surroundings, providing the opportunity for new things to grow. In the matter, this first became obvious when Drywall began to appear in my work. Drywall and and lime are two materials I experimented a lot with before my trip.

"Smeltende steen"

As the work progresses I am gradually distancing myself from the direct experience in the mountains, and inspiration is deepening. This time a clear image of "The Source of Blue" appeared before my mind's eye. This is a work that I made in 2006 after tracking in Iceland. This was a similarly intense experience with nature. Apparently connections with my earlier work are being made in my consciousness.

Clay comes to a rest and sinks, accumulates, and connects to its surrounding, subsequently giving new vegetation a chance to grow. The digesting process of inspiration seems to follow a similar pattern. All this has led to the materialization of "the Sources": works on drywall of an right-angled shape that is unusual to my working process.

"Blauwe bron"

"Blauwe Bron"

"Blauwe Bron"

At first the works were connecting with the very beginning of the stream. The place where earth and water are separating for the first time, and land and rivers are emerging as separate entities. These works seemingly wanted to "downstream". This became obvious through the matter that was used. I started using matter found near the mouth of the river. To Finish the works I used sand from Brittany, which I visited two years ago. It should be noted that in earlier times, when the sea level was much lower, the Rhine at the present mouth at Katwijk, went on through the Strait of Dover to end in the ocean in the surroundings of Brittany.

Smeltende stenen / Melting stones

As a starting point when creating the Primeval Landscapes I often use natural matter that has been processed by man, such as wooden planks and stone slates that have been shaped to to suit mankind. My intention is restore their natural identity and organic beauty. This time I started with pine slats and MDF. The latter is grinded wood pressed into new shapes. I will continue to work with the shapes of the objects  as I left behind at the source of the Rhine.

To determine the shapes and sizes of the "Melting Stones" I used  the Fibonacci sequence as guidance. This is a series of numbers of which the mutual relationship approaches the golden ratio. This ratio can be found in nature in countless variations. In my previous works I used the Fibonacci sequence a number of times in the shape of a spirale.

Eerste oogst / First harvest

Back in my studio in Noordwijk it is time to assess. What has happend and what exacly have I brought home? The cloths are drying and are slowly coming loose from the rocks from which they emerged.
At first I intended to use the clothes as a rough sketch that I would finish when I got back to my studio. Now I am not so sure about that anymore, and leave them as they are for now.

Whenever I am at an impressive place, like when I was at the source of the Rhine, it is inevitable that I bring some of the local matter back home to my studio in Noordwijk. The matter I worked with certainly had to come with me.
In the high mountains, where the first streams emerge, the transport function of a river is clearly visible. Pure clay gets dissolved in the flowing water. When the movement stops, the clay sinks to the bottom to form a layer. From this layer vegetation can sprout when the river runs dry. This is a phenomenon I would like to experiment with in my works to come.

The grit below is heavier than the dissolved clay, hence it reaches the bottom earlier. Therefore you can find it under the clay layer or in places where the water is streaming.

Lower in the valley the soil layers get older. Earth and grid are mixed. Vegetation gets a chance  to thrive here, so you can also find roots and the influence of composting. Everything attains the same color, and makes for a warmer ambience.

Just before I left the area around the source of the Rhine I visited a high altitude stone valley. I could not resist bringing back some "souvenirs" from this place as well.

This lime comes from a "Melting stone" that I encountered on the pass, just before leaving the valley that I worked in for several days.
