De Nieuwe Wereld / The New World.

De Nieuwe Wereld / The New World

Due to the work on the greenhouse effect, I haven't been in my studio much in the past year. It was therefore nice to be able to work on a new series again this winter. I was just in the final phase when I received a call from the Kunstklank foundation asking if I wanted to do something on the Calorama estate in my hometown of Noordwijk. Kunstklank is an organization that organizes performances at beautiful locations. This time, the Calorama estate was the place where music, dance, theater and visual arts come together around the theme The New World. https://www.kunstklank.nl
Between the phone call and the first visit to the estate, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to work with a hemp circle, containing a Guardian of the Earth. When exploring the location, I quickly found the right place for this project. Because the opening was soon, I had to start right away. The seeds had to go into the ground. The mowing time for this spot was brought forward so I could get started.

The circle had four entrances aligned with the cardinal points. During the orientation on the estate I found out that there was a stock of sand on the estate that had been excavated under the tower of the old St Jeroenskerk. Entering the circle goes through this sand. In the circle I connected the cardinal points with old roof slates from the other St Jeroenskerk (I used these slates at the time for the Leileven series. https://www.robvanleeuwen.com/het-oerlandschap
You now enter the New World over the sand on which one church was built only to end up on slate that the other church has used to keep out the elements. Where the lines intersect is the point where the Guardian of the Earth began to grow.

The concept of the Guardians originated in 2007 during a location project in Noordwijk. The idea at the time was that a network would be created between the places on earth where I worked. The works created by this project could not be left standing, but the idea was continued in the workshop "Binding with the Earth". Natural matter such as sand, clay or a humus layer from a workshop location was taken to get a place in the artworks at the next location.
The first Guardian to take a permanent position was the "Forester". While the elements affect him, he kept an eye on things in the Piet Florisdal in Noordwijk. Every year I went to work there for a few days to help the "Forester" grow.
Last year this interaction between me and the elements came to an end and the Ranger was removed. https://oerlandschap.blogspot.com/2017/05/de-boswachter-forester.html

Up to this point, the concept of the Guardians followed a devised trail. This came to an end in 2018. For the next Guardians, I was unexpectedly caught up in a stream of events that eventually lead to two Guardians in southern Spain. I have described the process in this blog post: https://oerlandschap.blogspot.com/2018/05/wachters.html
I experience the Watcher that I am making now as a similar process. Again, the invitation came out of nowhere and I was caught up in a stream of events that eventually leads to this Guardian of the Earth.

Hennep / Hemp.

The material that plays a central role in making the Guardians is hemp. I have been incorporating fiber hemp into my art since 2003. At the time I had grown some in the vegetable garden and then used the whole plant from root to branch in my Primeval landscapes. To me, the hemp symbolizes the relationship that humans have with nature. An age-old plant that grows easily, requires no pesticides and where every part is useful and usable. This plant is hardly used because, among other things, there is more and easier money to earn from plastic.
Until then, hemp was one of the materials I used in my works. Last year I had the opportunity to get started with the hemp plants myself. A forest of 6 by 12 m as a living sculpture.

A fascinating journey that I have described from sowing to harvesting in 5 blog posts that can be found here: https://www.robvanleeuwen.com/panta-rei
In my research into hemp, I came across building blocks made of hemp and lime. The trunk of the hemp plant consists of fibers and wood. The wood is a by-product of the extraction of the fibers. With these building blocks, however, the wood is pressed together with lime. When the phone call from Kunstklank came, it was immediately clear to me that I wanted to work with these building blocks.

Fibers harvested from the hemp forest were also included in this Guardian.

Connecting with the earth, working together with nature. These are the core concepts I want to work with. So I decided that I wanted to grow a circle of hemp. The elements thought very differently about that. The budding plants had to endure heavy weather, after which the flattened plants became a feast for the snails. Then I seeded again. This did not germinate because the weather was too humid. So...!, move along. Let go of the circle of hemp and see what will grow.
