Wachters / Guardians.

The invitation came out of the blue. December last year, at the end of a shamanistic weekend, one of the participants came to me and said: "I own a piece of land in Southern Spain and I have the feeling that you must come there and make something." Somewhat befuddled, I returned to saying my farewells to my fellow participants. Yet there was one sentence that stuck in my mind: "An altar for the Earth".
In the following week there was a lot to absorb, but after a while I started to investigate what the invitation was about, keeping in mind that it could turn out to be nothing. The landscape I would end up in was devastating. A Primordial Landscape on earth that I was immidiatly attracted too.

After a while I got in touch to get a clearer picture of what the offer entailed.  It turned out that there was no clear plan, as the invitation was purely intuïtive. This, along with the attraction that the landscape had on me, became the base of this adventure.

It had become clear that the journey was going to happen. The concrete details were still very much unclear, however. My modus operandi would be informed by the matter; at any rate, I knew that I wanted to work with lime. The landscape called for it, and the lime with which I had frequently worked in the past few years originates from Spain. A bucket of lime, however, is not something that you can bring on a plane. Aside from this, the natural materials with which I work can not be obtained from the regular building circuit. Luckily my supplier in the Netherlands could bring me into contact with a german architect in South-Spain, who would be able to supply me with lime. And, as if it was meant to be, she happened to live exactly on the route from the airport to our destination. On visiting her website I found out that she has developed a natural method of building, using bricks bade of clay and hemp: http://cannabric.com/
This inspired me. Both clay and hemp have been a staple of my artistic materials since 2003, and are used regularly in my Primordial Landscapes. It became clear to me that I wanted to work with these bricks.

Visiting the location where the bricks were manufactured was an adventure in and of itself. The mountains in this part of Spain are very suitable for digging caves in. The clay that is extracted in the process can be reused to manufacture the aforementioned "cannabrics". The office/showroom of the company was located in a self-dug cave system, through which we received an extensive tour. The natural matters used were presented to us with near-sacred reverence.

The concept of The Guardians came to be in 2007, during a local project in Noordwijk. The idea at the time was that a network would be formed between places on earth where I had worked. The works that came to be during the project could not persist, but the general idea was continued in the workshop "Connecting with the Earth". Natural matter such as sand, clay, and the humus on a workshop site were brought to receive a place in the artworks of the next location. The first Guardian to receive a permanent place is "The Forester". While the elements impinged on him, he keeps watch at the Piet Florisdal in Noordwijk. Every year I go there for a few days to further his development. I have previously written about the Forester's development in the following blogpost.

De Spaanse Wachters / The Spanish Guardians.

As soon as the Spanish adventure attained a solid form, I felt I might be having a new Guardian on hands. After I had found the right spot, and began to work, it turned out to be two Guardians that were growing from the earth simultaneously. The reactions that they received afterwards were such that I could confidently let go of the works, to return to the Netherlands.
