Nieuwe Rotsen / New Rocks

"Land van de krakende klei", 100-120cm.

Barsten en brokstukken / Cracks and Fragments.

Working with the elements has given me a great predilection for natural shaped cracks and fragments. Cracks formed by rivers and vulcanoes, boulders separated from mountains, cracks in tree-trunks, the examples are endless. In my Primeval Landscape I worked a lot with the unpredictable cracks that appear in clay as it dries. I only know that the clay is going to crack, but I don't know how. I find this element of uncertainty pleasing. Cracks have featured prominently within art. For me, one off the most beautiful cracks in art is "The crack within where the light comes in" from Leonard Cohen in the song "Anthem"

Through the years this song has been an inspiration for me. Also in the series "Slate Life". These works are formed from the old roof-slates of the St Jeroens-church in my hometown Noordwijk.

For two of the Slate Life works I literally copied the title of the Leonard Cohen song.

"The Crack within where the light comes in", 72-41cm.

"The Crack within where the light comes in 2", 72-41cm.

Nieuwe Rotsen / New Rocks.

The old roof-slates also have a place in the New Rocks series. I started these new works by dropping a naturally shaped boulder on the roof-slates.

This was the start of the journey of the New Rocks, the journey that each Primeval Landscape must undertake. It is a journey that begins with natural matter that has been molded to fit the needs of mankind, and the search for its raw essence. Jokingly I call this the voyage from the Gamma to God (Gamma is a Dutch building market). This is also how the "New Rocks" materialized. Rocks in which every crack and fragment has found there place.

"King of Rocks", 71-55cm.

"New Rock 1"'63-57cm.

"New Rock 2", 65-61cm.

stars explode and mountains melt
creation shifts, the flow is felt
as space and time are torn and worn
life persists, New Rocks are born
