Aan de andere kant van de stroom, bij de monding van de Rijn in Katwijk, is alles anders dan bij de bron in Zwitserland. Daar maakt het niet zoveel uit wat je als mens voor plannen hebt met het water Uiteindelijk maakt het water dat met de bergen zelf uit.
Waar de rivier in de zee stroomt zijn de rollen omgekeerd. Waar en wanneer het water stroomt wordt volledig door de mens bepaald. Het uitgangspunt hierbij is dat de doorstroming van de rivier naar de zee in stand blijft en dat het land beschermd wordt tegen het zeewater. Stromen of niet stromen is een puur rationele beslissing. Indrukwekkende constructies zijn gemaakt om dit te bewerkstelligen.
On the other side of the stream, at the mouth of the river in Katwijk, things are very different than at the source of the river in Switzerland. Over there it does not matter what plans mankind has for the river. That is up to the water and the mountains.
At the mouth of the river, where and when the water flows is fully controlled by men.
Where the river meets the sea the tables get turned. Where and when water flows is fully controlled by man. The objective is to maintain the stream and to protect the land from the seawater. Whether or not the stream is allowed to flow is a purely rational decision. Impressive structures have been erected to accomplish this.
Regelmatig fietsend over deze constructie is bij mij het Panta rei project ontstaan. In mijn werk is het spanningsveld tussen de eigen identiteit van de natuur en dat wat de mens er mee wil, een constant aanwezige factor. Hier in Katwijk, waar de eigen identiteit van de rivier volledig is ingekapseld, is bij mij het idee ontstaan om naar de bron van de rivier te reizen en dit spanningsveld verder te onderzoeken.
As I cycled over this structure on a regular base, the idea for the Panta Rei project began to take shape within me. In my work the tension between nature's individual identity and the intentions of man is a universally present factor. Here in Katwijk the identity of the river is fully encapsulated. This inspired me to travel to the source of the river to further investigate this tension.
Op dit moment wordt er in Katwijk flink gewerkt aan de versteviging van de kust om de rijzende zeespiegel het hoofd te bieden. Dit houdt ook in dat de uitwatering van de Rijn aangepast moet worden. Het komt er op neer dat de rivier wordt uitgegraven en de bodem als een snelweg geasfalteerd wordt. Zoals een schilder zijn doek prepareert, zo wordt ook de bodem van de rivier geprepareerd met duurzaam doek en wilgentenen.
At this moment in Katwijk, a lot of work is in progress to reinforce the coastline in order to match the rising sea level. This means that the spillway of the river also has to be modified. This basically means excavating the bottom and plaster it like a highway. Not unlike how a painter prepares his canvas, the riverbed is also prepared with sustainable cloth and willow branches.
Ook de rivieroevers worden aangepakt. Nieuwe, hogere dammen begeleiden het water naar de zee. Opvallend is dat de nieuwe basalt blokken al snel een prachtige groene kleur hebben door de aangroei van wier. Een lokale voorbijganger wist mij te vertellen dat dit darmwier is. Ik heb dit wier geoogst om het op mijn atelier te gebruiken.

Uit mijn indrukken bij de uitwatering van de Rijn is een tweeluik ontstaan. Hierin is het contrast tussen het oncontroleerbare bij de bron en de wens tot absolute controle bij de monding de inspiratie. De stroom van de rivier is gerationaliseerd, de stroom van de creativiteit is dat zeker niet.
My impressions at the spillway of the Rhine at Katwijk led to a diptych. The inspiration is the contrast between the uncontrolled conditions at the source of the river, and man's desire for full control at the other end of the river. The flow of the river is rationalized, the flow of creativity certainly is not.

De gebruikte materie komt ook van beide kanten van de rivier. Klei en grind van de bron en klei en zand zoals dat door de eeuwen heen bij de monding is afgezet. Dit wordt verbonden door het wier dat aangroeit zodra er een nieuwe menselijke ingreep heeft plaatsgevonden.
